Community-Based support for People with Mental Health Disabilities: What makes a difference?
Description: UnitingCare Wesley Port Adelaide is now a significant provider of non-clinical services particularly housing, support for living independently, employment and recreation programs. This paper has been written based on the advice of staff and Consumers of UnitingCare Wesley Port Adelaide’s various programs for people with disabilities resulting from Mental Illness who are seeking to live fulfilled lives in the community. Its perspective is that of a non-clinical approach but also acknowledges the fundamental importance of clinicians and other players within the Mental Health system.

Refugee Support Program - Asylum Seekers to Citizens: From Detention Centres to Independent Housing
Description: The Refugee Support Program, a non clinical community support program, is a recent initiative of UnitingCare Wesley Port Adelaide. The program works with asylum seekers who have exited Glenside Psychiatric Hospital, all of whom had recently been detained for a number of years in Baxter and other detention centres in Australia. This paper will outline the evolving history of the program in response to the complex needs of the clients, it will explore the roles and experiences of community support workers and provide views about the support from the perspective of the clients.

Effective Consumer Participation in Organisational Change
Description: In June 2005 UnitingCare Wesley Port Adelaide’s employed two permanent part-time Consumer Consultants to work across their twelve Community Mental Health Teams. UnitingCare Wesley Port Adelaide is a non-government organisation that offers a wide range of community services including psycho-social rehabilitation in both metropolitan and rural areas of South Australia through their Community Mental Health teams. These teams are conscious of having effective and responsive consumer participation and this led to the development of the two mental health consumer consultant positions. This paper will explore the successes and difficulties in implementing, integrating and pursuing flexible, appropriate and consumer friendly organisational change.
