Disability Action Plan

In 2009 UCWPA began a process to develop an organisational wide Disability Action Plan which will improve the quality of service provision to clients/residents and their families/carers and ensure that our services reach a larger proportion of the community.

UCWPA Disability Action Plan (PDF)

UCWPA has a commitment to social justice and equality and will work toward the improvement of services to maximise the inclusion of people with a disability and eliminate any discrimination practices.

The Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) makes it unlawful to discriminate in the provision of goods, services or facilities against people on the basis that they have, or may have, a disability. It also makes it unlawful to discriminate against a person on the basis that one of her or his associates has, or may have, a disability.

The aim of the Disability Action Plan is to:

  • Demonstrate our commitment to the elimination of discrimination against people with disabilities;
  • Increase the awareness of staff about disability issues;
  • Promote principles of access and equity;
  • Assist services to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) and minimise the need for complaints.

In keeping with the principles of the South Australian Disability Services Act (1993), UnitingCare Wesley Port Adelaide is committed to the following principles:

  • People with disabilities are individuals, no matter how they acquired their disability, what sort of disability they have or how severe their disability is.
  • People with disabilities have the right to be respected and treated with dignity.
  • People with disabilities have the same human rights and responsibilities as any member of the Australian community.
  • People with disabilities have the same rights as any member of the Australian community to realise their potential for intellectual, physical, social, emotional, sexual and spiritual development.
  • People with disabilities have the same rights as any member of the Australian community to make their own decisions about their lifestyle.
  • People with disabilities have a right to be protected from neglect, abuse, intimidation and exploitation.
  • People with disabilities have the same rights as any member of the Australian community to the assistance and support that will enable them to exercise their rights, discharge their responsibilities and attain a reasonable quality of life.
