Whyalla Community Living

Description of the Program

The Whyalla Community Living Program has been providing psychosocial rehabilitation to people with a mental illness in the rural city of Whyalla since 2002. It began by providing supports to consumers between 15 and 25 years but has recently expanded to include consumers up to 65 years. Young people however, remain a priority.

The program supports people to develop and/or maintain the skills, resources and confidence they need to live in the community, including securing and establishing independent housing.

The program supports and empowers individuals to:

  • access and maintain long term housing
  • increase independent living skills
  • fully and actively participate in the community
  • address physical and mental health needs

Eligibility for Service

  • Complex needs affecting ability to live independently.
  • Requiring support to establish and maintain an independent living environment that promotes good health and quality of life.
  • Complex housing needs, homeless or at risk of homelessness or inappropriate unsustainable housing.
  • Demonstrates a natural connection with the local community through current or previous residency and/or the presence of a supportive family and/ or social network.
  • Willing to participate and to receive independent living support services.
  • Aged between 15 and 65 years.
  • Experienced a mental health related issue (but not necessarily have a formal diagnosis).
  • All referrals to the program must arise from Community Mental Health Services, Child and
  • dolescent Mental Health Services, Families SA, Housing SA or Glenside Hospital.

Capacity of the Program

Whyalla Community Living is funded to provide 65 hours of direct consumer support per week, ranging up to 10 hours per person per week.

Service and Funding Agreement

Whyalla Community Living is funded by the Department for Families and Communities.  The program works in partnership with Community Mental Health Services, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, Families SA and Housing SA.
