Refugee Support Program

Description of the Program

The Refugee Support Program is a mental health community support and housing program for asylum seekers in South Australia.  The program was initiated at the request of the Special Stay Unit at Glenside Hospital in response to people referred from  Baxter Detention Centre who had experienced significant trauma and mental health issues. The program began in mid 2005 and works closely with support agencies such as STTARS (Survivors of Torture and Trauma, Assistance and Rehabilitation Service) and the Australian Refugee Association. Referrals have to this point been made through Mental Health Services Glenside Hospital when consumers have gained a Visa (Permanent or Temporary Protection), a Bridging Visa or Residential Determination.

The program supports and empowers individuals to:

  • access and maintain housing
  • increase independent living skills including access to English classes
  • fully and actively participate in the community
  • address physical and mental health needs
  • access legal representation regarding their visa applications.

Eligibility for Service

Consumers who have been in detention, have a diagnosed mental health disorder and referred by Glenside Hospital

Capacity of the Program

The Refugee Support Program currently provides flexible capacity based on need from Mental Health Services and other agencies such as Australian Red Cross.  As of June 2006 the program was supporting 11 consumers.
