The Strengthening Families in the West Program available to low-income and disadvantaged families living in the Charles Sturt Council and the western end of the Port Adelaide and Enfield Council. The program works alongside parents and carers with the aim of strengthening families and enhancing family relationships. Linking families to community resources and services is integral to this process.
Services provided include:
Home-based support
A home-based support service providing counselling, support, education and advocacy. Families are encouraged and assisted to access other resources and supports in the community. Support may be provided for up to six months. Referrals are accepted directly from families or from other agencies and service providers.
Information and referral
This service offers information on community services, activities and events and will refer to other services where appropriate.
Counselling
Short term counselling may be available to adults where personal issues are affecting family life or causing difficulties with parenting or where assistance is required to rebuild family relationships.
Community Participation
Opportunities are provided for families to participate in various activities and functions throughout the year. Recent events include: Port Parade, Child Protection Week, Mental Health Week. Families are encouraged to participate in these and other community events, and to develop local friendships and support networks.
Workshops and Groups
Occasional workshops and groups are provided for families, parents or young people that aim to enhance social and personal development, focusing on issues such as self-esteem, assertiveness and developing skills for positive personal relationships.
