Personal Support Program

The Personal Support Program (PSP) is part of the Federal Government's Australians Working Together Initiative designed to encourage people on income support to stay connected to the economic and social life of the community.

PSP providers help people tackle difficult personal circumstances that impat on their capacity to engage in employment or community life. The program is a bridge between short-term crisis assistance and employment-related assistance.

The program can assist people with issues such as:

  • Accommodation;
  • Emotial distress, including anxiety, depression, anger and lack of confidence;
  • Alcohol and other drug addictions;
  • Legal matters;
  • Money matters;
  • Family and relationship difficulties; and
  • Health matters.

The program has the capacity to work with people for up to two years. The PSP worker will consult with the participant to work out the best way to assist them and their needs, and togehter they develop a goal plan that evolves over time. The plan is worked through and updated as appropriate.

The PSP worker can assist the participant through:

  • Providing counselling;
  • Listening, care and understanding;
  • Providing support and strategies to overcome difficulties;
  • Assist to recognise and draw on your own strengths and abilities;
  • Referrals and information about other services and agencies; and
  • Assisting you to make decisions about the direction that you are interested in taking.

Please speak with a Centrelink worker to be referred to the progam.

The program is based at UCWPA's Family & Support Services,
